Ten extremely painful customs used to celebrate a boy's arrival into manhood

Who knew it would be so painful to call yourself a man? “It ain’t the facial hair but the dare.” Let us have a look at strange customs to initiate and celebrate the manhood all over the world.

Taste the manhood

The Etoro tribe of Papau New Guinea has a strange custom of celebrating a boy reaching manhood. The young boys of the tribe have to consume the semen of some older member of the tribe, which initiates the homosexual relationship between the boy and his mentor. It is believed that the real strength of a man is in his semen.

Scars look stunning

The Kaningara practice in Papua New Guinea has a long practiced custom of making scars on bodies of young ones. The body parts are cut repeatedly with the help of sharp pieces of bamboo to give them scars to resemble the skin of a crocodile. This way the young boys of the tribe complete their journey from boyhood to manhood.

The lion heart

What exactly would be your reaction if you were asked to kill an adult male lion? Moreover, the situation becomes deadly when you have only a spear and a shield to go face to face with a lion. Massai men go one on one with the king of the jungle. All they have to kill the lion is a spear and a shield to protect themselves.

Go bald

The Barabaig Cattle herding Tribes in East Africa has a tradition of shaving young boys head and adding three horizontal painful cuts near the neck, that go down to the bone. This weird and painful ritual complete the transition to adulthood. Boys wear the scars they get from the ritual with pride, since it is a symbol of their manhood.

Lie down

In Luiseno Indian tribe, boys have to go through severe pain to call themselves men. The boys have to tolerate the bites of ants as they lie among millions of ants. The boys are not allowed to yell during the process, which makes it more painful. It includes giving hallucinogenic drugs to boys that make them hallucinate and see “visions.”

Cut loose

Another tribe of Papua New Guinea, Matausa has a belief that boys cannot be called a man till the moment they eject all the blood that has come to them from their mother. The boys stick two wooden canes into their throats and then shove bundles of reeds through their nostrils to take out all the blood.

Whip them

In West Africa, The Fulani tribe practices the whipping custom to introduce Fulani men to adulthood. The men cannot reveal the pain on their faces when whipped by a challenger.

Circumcise

The Xhosa-speaking people in South Africa practice a painful custom that includes circumcising the boys that converts them into men. The ritual is so deadly that many die during the removal of the foreskin.

Put the gloves on

The Setere-Mawe Tribe of Amazon rain forest, Brazil has a cruel tradition where the young boys have to put their hands into a glove full of Bullet ants to call themselves men. The pain caused by the bite of these ants has earned them the name, Bullet ants. It feels as if you have put hands on fire. The boys should not cry since it would cause them to go through the pain ever again until they pass the tests without shedding a tear.

Be in charge

An Australian Aboriginal tribe performs a ritual for birth control among young boys. They make a hole through the boy’s penis near the base so that he can propagate but only at a special occasion since it prevents the sperm to pass through unless you plug the hole, which requires a helping hand.
